Applied Behavior Analysis

Helping children with autism reach their full potential

What is ABA?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a scientifically research-based, data-driven method for systematic ongoing evaluation and teaching strategies for developmentally appropriate behavior. It is implemented to help clients learn new skills that can be integrated across essential areas of day-to-day experiences usually required for life-long success. ABA is a proven and highly effective approach for teaching children and adolescents with autism necessary adaptive skills for the enjoyment of greatest independence in everyday living when interacting at home, at school, and in the community.

Areas where ABA can help

  • Behavior management (emotional regulation, flexible thinking, problem solving)

  • Communication (language development and conversational skills)

  • Social skills (adaptive and functional as needed for life at home, with friends, and co-workers)

  • Organizational (executive function) skills

  • Embedded fine and gross motor skills (using buttons, zippers, pouring liquid, handwriting, climbing stairs, enjoying playground equipment)

  • Daily living skills (potty training, self-care, vocational)

  • School readiness (engagement for early learning/group learning, following routines)

How to get started and what will ABA therapy look like?

  1. Services begin with an initial referral - by calling our office at 682-333-1555. At times your physician may fax us a confidential referral form for ABA to 817-717-2378. When we connect with you we will gather a bit of information about your child’s needs, your insurance information and explain our process for beginning services.

  2. Cost of Services - your out of pocket expense will be dependent on your insurance benefits. We do all the foot work to verify your insurance benefits, and will prepare a GOOD FAITH ESTIMATE based on what can be anticipated. *We are are credentialed with most all major insurance carriers, most Medicaid plans, and can request a Single Case Agreement in some cases if we are not in network.

  3. Assessment - Applied Behavior Analysis is very specialized and differs from traditional therapy. Specific assessments for individuals with autism are scheduled and usually take about 8 hours that can be conducted over multiple days/visits. A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) is the only professional specifically licensed to perform an assessment for ABA therapy services. Once the assessment is completed, the BCBA will review results with the caregiver/guardian. An Individualized Treatment plan will be offered to address specific areas of need identified from the age appropriate assessment.

  4. Course of treatment - Therapy sessions will be determined based on the assessments and consultation with the caregiver/guardian and scheduled according to intensity of therapy needed and as agreed. Services begin with a Client Orientation with caregivers/guardians in a thorough session covering all the expectations and responsibilities of each party. Parents/Caregivers are provided a binder with tabs to keep all information related to ABA services organized. Treatment plans will include an hour per week for “parent training” to review progress, and teach caregivers the interventions implemented in therapy sessions for generalization across all environments. The BCBA and the caregiver are partners in the therapy process and plans are adjusted as mutually agreed. *Consistency is pivotal in making expected growth and progress in overall skill development. The BCBA will work with you to overcome challenges outside of the therapy sessions and ensure long-term success once goals are met. Individual sessions are provided by behavior technicians specifically trained to carry out the BCBA’s individualized treatment plan across environments and under the BCBA’s explicit supervision.

  5. Methods - ABA is a scientifically proven approach to teaching skills, facilitating developmental gains and progress by using data driven information to make treatment decisions. As such, there are many methods that come under an ABA based approach. At Lake Pointe, our therapists utilize Natural Environment Training, PEAK Relational Training, an emphasis of building trust and relationship with clients and caregivers, and utilize a lot of play!

A treatment method or an educational method that will work for one child may not work for another child. The ONE common denominator for all children is that EARLY INTERVENTION does work and improves outcomes.
